Emma's extremely important to him, and this is extremely important to him, and he wants to make sure he does this right. Or - as right as the two of them can make it.
In a simple pale blue button-down shirt and dark trousers (with equally dark shoes), he does look the picture of a well-dressed date. Not too fancy, no ties or bows or anything, but clean and neat.
And when he sees Emma coming down the stairs, it's like every cliche falls into place: things about breaths being caught in throats, and the world going still, and Emma being the only person in it besides him.
